For institutional investment portfolios including foundations, endowments and pension funds, the oversight of the investment process ultimately falls to the Board of Trustees. The Trustees have responsibility for the stewardship of the portfolio and the staff serves the board to assist in that function. In addition, the board may choose to retain investment advisors and consultants in order to develop and implement its investment plans and strategies as well as monitor and measure the performance results. All have a fiduciary responsibility in their service to the organization.
As an Investment Steward, the trustees are responsible for managing the overall investment strategy: deciding on the asset allocation, defining the details of the strategy, implementing the strategy with appropriate Investment Managers, and monitoring the strategy on an ongoing basis.
However, many trustees are not equipped in this role. At Winthrop Capital Management, we assist boards and staff in developing and executing strategies in the role as stewards. In addition, we assist boards in recognizing the conflicts of interest, layered fees and other abuses that exist in the financial industry. At Winthrop Capital Management, we are not conflicted in providing investment management and consulting services to our clients. |
